69 Dodge Coronet Super Bee 440 Six Pack: Muscle Car Legend

The late 60s were a great time for muscle car enthusiasts. All the manufacturers were in it, and sometimes even divisions within the same company would go head to head. In 1969, Plymouth introduced the Road Runner, and, not to be outdone, Dodge entered the muscle car race with the Super Bee 440 Six Pack.

So I’m going to pick up a pizza that we had just ordered at a place not far from our house and, well, look what I spotted, and how could anybody possibly miss this 1969½ Dodge Super Bee 440 Six Pack? It is one of the most legendary, purpose-built factory drag racers of the muscle car era. Introduced mid-year in 1969 to outdo Plymouth’s Road Runner, this low-cost, no-frills street brawler was designed strictly for straight-line dominance.

How could anybody possibly miss this in a parking lot?

The heart of the A12 package was a 440-cubic-inch high-performance V8 topped with three Holley two-barrel carburetors sitting on an aluminum intake manifold. Marketing gave it the name Six-Pack, and a legend was born. Officially factory-rated at 390 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque, but actual output was widely understood to be closer to 450, matching the legendary 426 HEMI’s torque rating, offering nearly identical low-end street acceleration but at a fraction of the cost. It could blast from 0 to 60 mph in about five and a half seconds.

Although this owner has replaced the original No-Frill wheels with aftermarket ones, and I think they look better, the rest of the car is as it left the factory.

To minimize weight and optimize track performance, Dodge skipped standard street amenities and installed heavy-duty hardware straight from the factory, like its matte-black, fiberglass pin-on hood featuring a massive, functional ram-air scoop. It had no hinges; it was held entirely by four hood pins so it could be completely removed at the track. Power was routed through either a heavy-duty TorqueFlite 727 automatic or a rugged 4-speed manual transmission; this one was ordered with the latter, turning a brutal Dana 60 rear axle with 4.10:1 gears. All this for just over 3 grand, $26,000 today! That still would be a super price.

This super-clean example was outfitted with the automatic on the floor.

Talk about limited production runs. It was only produced during a limited three-month window. Only 1,907 units were built, with a tiny fraction (267 units) configured as 4-speed manual coupes, making authentic “M-code” VIN cars highly prized and worth a fortune to collectors today. Depending on the condition, one of these will cost you anywhere from $73,000 to pushing past $150,000 to $189,000.

The Fratzog
Can you name this logo? Introduced in a 1962 ad as The Fratzog, Dodge coined a meaningless word for a symmetrical three-pointed geometric star made of three broken deltoid arrows. It became iconic on mid-century muscle cars.

OK, if that’s not in your budget for 2027, Dodge announced a modern high-performance iteration in August 2026—the 2027 Dodge Charger Super Bee—which adapts a 600-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six “Sixpack” engine to achieve a 3.6-second 0–60 mph time. Official pricing has not yet been announced.

To lighten up the car, the hood had no hinges, just four pins, and to remove it, owners simply lifted it up.
