Car Spot: Jerry Seinfeld’s 55 VW Beetle

And I know the story why he bought this VW

How often do you stumble upon in a museum and know the story behind it before even reading the story board that goes with it? Probably, rarely, right? So we’re in Dallas visiting daughter Meg, who recently moved there, and going to attend the Packers game when they played the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. We got to Dallas early, and I wanted to check out the Dallas Car and Toy Museum. This is a great place to visit with lots of really cool cars. From the website: “Founded by passionate car collector and entrepreneur Ron Sturgeon, this extraordinary museum showcases an extensive collection of rare and classic cars, along with an impressive array of vintage toys and automobilia.” We spent several hours there, but when we came to Jerry Seinfeld’s 55 Beatle, we all started laughing because we know the story of how he came to own this Beatle.

Roll back the clock to about two years ago, when Ann’s cousin Dan wanted to buy a ’79 Beatle convertible since he had one a long time ago but had to sell it, well, because life got in the way. But now he’s like a man with a plan and wants another one. We started looking, and for a while it looked as if we were going to be making a trip to Finland, where we’d located one, but then we came across one that had been up for auction in Jacksonville, FL. He called the auction house, but it had been sold. No worries, he said, just let me know if the sale falls through, which it did.

The next call from the auction house goes to Dan, who does the deal. In the meantime, Seinfeld hears about that bug, but it is too late. The auction house mentions he has this blue Beetle, which Seinfeld buys. It was not only the auction house that told Dan the story, but also the guy who delivered Dan’s VW, who had Seinfeld’s in the same truck, taking it to him in California after dropping off Dan’s VW in Wisconsin. In case you’re not aware of it, Seinfeld is a huge collector, but mostly of Porsches.

RELATED Spot: The full story where this car ended up.

Wow, how’s that for a car story? The VW that got away from Jerry Seinfeld and the one he ended up with? I found lots of other cars at this museum spot worthy, and you’ll see them in future spots. Thanks for stopping by and reading about this week’s spot. Have a great week and come back next Sunday for another one of my spots, along with some of their history.
