New Hybrid Accord comfy family sedan with top-notch mpg …
Honda’s Accord is a car that’s hard not to like. It’s comfortable, handles well and provides a first rate ride. There’s room for four or five adults and the trunk is sufficiently large. Sexy it ain’t.
Now add a hybrid power system and well, for many, yawning will ensue.
Honda though has tweaked its 2017 Accord to cut a few pounds, add a little overall length, which aids trunk space, and given it a 16-horsepower boost. Refinement defines the Accord, which has been around now for 40 years. Accord never has been about sexy, it has been about service. Owners get their money’s worth in fuel and design efficiency.
The new Accord hybrid punches up its pony power by 16, now at 212 horses, but still with a modest 129 ft.-lbs. of torque. The tested dark red Accord features a 2.0-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder gas engine along with a hybrid electric system. Power is applied smoothly via the electronic CVT (continuously variable transmission), and the car is exceedingly quiet, inside and out.
But while the Accord cruises like a champ, it’s still fairly slow away from a stoplight and takes a while to wind up to highway speeds. There’s an Econ button to further slow the shifts to save fuel, but I left the test car in normal mode just for the small boost of power it provided. Ford Edge Titanium a top-flight crossover
Ford’s Edge is a good looking crossover that puts Ford’s boxy Flex to shame in handling and looks , but won’t haul as many people. Edge is a top-flight mid-size crossover with a comfortable ride, good power and an excellent interior for five adults.
My test unit was the almost top-level Titanium model with all-wheel-drive, so started at $38,490, including delivery. Only the Edge Sport is more upscale, starting at $40,990 and packs a turbocharged V6.
I found the metallic gray (magnetic) test Edge’s turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost I4 to be sufficient. It delivers a healthy 245 horsepower and boasts a 270 torque rating. So it’ll get up and go. Besides you’re not gonna take a crossover to Union Grove’s dragstrip anyway.
Ford’s EcoBoost engine works well with the standard 6-speed automatic, runs smooth and quiet and when you tromp the accelerator to get on the highway it’ll jump up to 70 mph quickly. Edge also gets away from stoplights well in town, not feeling as heavy as it’s nearly 4,100 lbs.
But the ride is what the family will like. Edge’s suspension is tuned to control rough Midwest roads and coddle passengers without making them feel they are floating along on a pillow. Stylish Hyundai Tucson looks great, drives great
I’ve found my new favorite small crossover vehicle, the Hyundai Tucson.
I’ll admit to being surprised, but I’m not sure why. Hyundai and sister company Kia have become the styling leaders among Asian car makes and their performance is on par, or better than most of their competitors too. Hyundai designers in particular seems to have mastered the simple, elegant interior with logical controls and a high-quality look and feel.
This new Tucson has that, plus a smooth pleasantly rounded exterior that is simply eye pleasing.
I drove a “winter white” top-of-the-line Limited AWD model, so granted, I had the best Tucson that Hyundai has to offer. Even at that the Tucson started at $31,300 and only added the bare minimum of options, a cargo cover and carpeted floor mats. Total, including delivery fee, was $32,510. That’s just below the average price of a new vehicle sale these days.
But the Tucson feels and looks much more upscale, starting with this one’s brown over tan leather interior with gloss black trim on the center stack’s face and pewter-look trim around the video screen and air vents.
