Car Spot: ’66 Batmobile

“I’m making you a souvenir!”

I was never into the superhero comic books as a kid, but loved the TV shows, probably because of the cars. The superhero cars might have started out as a production car, but the stuff they would add on to make it like its driver, super. One of those was the Batmobile equipped with a nose-mounted chain slicer, lasers, rockets, an onboard telephone, radar, a dash monitor, and an onboard computer. One of the coolest features was the ability to perform a quick 180-degree “bat-turn” using rear-mounted parachutes. That would be sooooo cool. If you just had to have one, well, you’d better have a ton of money. The original sold at auction for $4.62 million in 2013. However, your next best option would be one like this week’s spot, a reproduction I spotted recently at The Automobile Gallery’s Red Lewis Community Car Show in Green Bay.

It sure looks like the real deal, but this is a reproduction built in Indiana by Fiberglass Freaks and the only company licensed to build them by DC Comics.

Nick LeGros has always been a fan of the show and the car. Like just about every Batman TV fan would love to own the original, but it’s wayyyyyy out of reach, so he went for the next best thing, this example I drooled over, created Fiberglass Freaks, a company specializing in accurate, detailed replicas of the original Batmobile.

I managed to get Nick to pose in front of his car when he wasn’t busy answering all the questions about it.

He bought it about three years ago when it was time to find a Batmobile. He scoured the country and, of all places, found one in a private collection right in Green Bay. Ok, where were these cars when I worked in Green Bay as a sportscaster? Fiberglass Freaks seems to be the go-to spot to grab one of these. It’s built on a Lincoln frame and powered by a 383 Chevy motor producing 450 hp.

The heart and soul of this Batmobile.

“It’s a fun car to drive, little kids love it, and adults remember it. The thing we like about it is that it puts lots of smiles on a lot of people’s faces”, he told me. He also takes it to car shows like this one in Green Bay and tends to grab more attention than some of the other rare cars there. And why not? How many of the other cars shoot flames out the back? Holy weenie roaster, Batman!

So the thousand-dollar question is how much will one of these set you back if you just have to have one? Well, actually, it’s a several-hundred-thousand-dollar question because new from the factory, depending on the level of customization and features, they run anywhere from $299,999 to $389,380. Holy guacamole! That’s a Robin line from the TV show in case you didn’t know.

The interior is super-detailed.

I hope you had a great 4th of July and a great rest of your weekend. Come back next week for another one of my finds along my travels, along with some of the history behind it. Now, to the Batcave!

No car got more attention than this one. BTW, the parachutes for the 180 turn are not operational.

  1. As a kid, I was a super fan of the Batman TV series and, of course, a super fan of the Batmobile.
The Fiberglass Freaks replica is considered the best one money can buy. I would say even better than the original, LOL.
