Lambo’s big ol’ SUV packs a punch ,,,
Fast SUVs were a thing for a while and this week’s spot, a Lamborghini Urus, is a great example. While Lambo had a run at an SUV with the beastly LM002, this one the Uris, was much more refined and built for speed.
Since it introduced its last SUV Lambo has been purchased by the Volkswagen Group and it introduced the Urus as a 2018 model. It’s built on the Volkswagen MLB Evo platform and shares a lot of components with other of the VW Group’s luxury SUVs, like the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne, and VW Touareg (horrible name).
The name comes from the urus, the ancestor of modern domestic cattle, also known as the aurochs, an extinct wild ox of Europe. OK, whatever. Not sure I think of cattle or oxen as fast.
The concept was unveiled at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show and later that year shown at Pebble Beach. Powered by a 5.2-liter V10 shared with Lambo’s Gallardo, the exterior design is heavily influenced by the company’s V12 flagship, the Aventador. Although this is much taller and bulkier looking.
The Urus’s engine pumps out 614 horses and coupled with its all-wheel-drive layout has a top speed of 190 mph. It can accelerate from 0–60 in 3.1 seconds and clip off the quarter-mile in 11.3 seconds. making it one of the world’s fastest production SUVs. All this fun comes at a steep cost though, around $235,000.
You know what? I know this is a Lambo but I think you could get more bang for your buck with a couple of other options like the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat with its 710 horsepower 6.2-liter V8 mated to an 8-speed automatic. It takes just 3.9 seconds to get to 60 mph from a standstill and 14.4 seconds to do the quarter-mile. Top speed is 203 mph and all for $91,740. Now the catch is if you could find one as its final model run this year is sold out. Let’s face it, that’s less than half the cost and just a half a second slower from 0-60 mph.

Another option would be the discontinued Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. It is the hottest thing ever to wear a Jeep badge and with 707 hp it’s just 10 less than a Hellcat-powered Challenger and Charger, but that difference is hardly noticeable.
The Trackhawk’s AWD traction allowed the Jeep to blast to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, just two-tenths of a second slower than the Lambo. But like the Durango, good luck in finding one. The Jeep was discontinued after the 2021 run. Finding a decent used one will set you back around $80 grand.
Still, compared with the Lambo either delivers a lot more bang for the buck. I’ve driven both the Durango and the Jeep on the track at Road America and they are a blast. However, with the market moving to hybrids and electrics the fast gas-powered SUVs might become a thing of the past. Sad!

Thanks for stopping by and checking out this week’s spot. While you’re here read some of my others and a few of Mark’s new car reviews. Come back next week for another spot along with some of its history and have a great weekend.
