2020 Chicago Auto Show Highlights

Lots a new models revealed

This year’s Chicago Auto Show shapes up to be one of the best in a very long time. Mark and I traveled down to Chicago during media days and there was a lot of excitement.

Other cool stuff

How about this Ford GT that was manufactured out of liquid carbon fiber. Ford says they will make about a dozen of these this year and they take about three times longer to make than the standard Ford GT.

Ford also had a preproduction model of its new Mustang Mach-E five-door electric SUV. It will be packed with technology. Doors on it can be opened with a key fob by just touching the door or using a smart phone. It’s expected to go on sale later this year. I could get excited about this. With the performance package, it will go 0-60 in about three seconds. It also will have a 300 mile range.

There were two 2020 Corvettes on display. These are preproduction models since the new ones have just started to be built. I really liked the orange convertible.

Jeep had yet another special edition to show off. This Wrangler Unlimited is the JPP20 put together will all kinds of goodies from Mopar Performance including a two-inch lift kit, Rubicon Warn Winch, LED light packages and tons more. Dealer orders will open in the second quarter while vehicles will begin showing up at dealerships this summer.

Genesis is jumping into the SUV market with their GV80.  This vehicle will play in the luxury market and its interesting design should help it stand out in this hugely competitive segment. It will go up against the Mercedes  GLE and Audi Q7.

I think Subaru had one of the best vehicle display areas at the show. Besides the woodsy setting, there were large videos projected behind the rocks showing different landmarks and one in the floor which looked like a pond. There were even smells from the outdoors.

Then there were some unique cars, like this Rolls Royce covered in rhinestones, this car, a Golden Sahara II, wonder what number one looked like, and a 1950 Studebaker Ice Princes. These unique vehicles came from The Klairmont Kollections located in Chicago.

Several brands have ride experiences and the most popular is Camp Jeep. Be sure to get to the show early or be prepared to wait for up to two hours. It’s well worth it though said the biased Jeep guy.

There are all kinds of racing simulators where you can drive cars on tracks and even the Ford Raptor in an off-road race. At one point today I had the second fastest time but I sucked with all of the on road sims. Be prepared to wait at least an hour in line for these since they are very popular. The 2020 Chicago Auto Show runs at McCormick Place now through February 17.

BTW, I racked up another 7,221 steps and 2.5 miles today exploring. What a fun way to exercise.
